Out of the mouths of kids.

as reported by my dad or “Grandpa”

While driving the girls from my house to your house, Maria asked me to ask Jane to get her some shoes with wheels.

I dialed the cell phone, handed it to Maria, and told her to tell Grandma Herself.

She talked to Jane and described what she was looking for, finished the call and gave me the phone back.

Maggie said, “I wish I knew how they make cell phones???

Maria said, “I wish I knew how they make cows!???

Single Dad-dom the complete weekend.

Well, the weekend was successful.

No kiddies died, though we did sustain one minor injury which I had absolutely nothing to do with.

Friday –Monday we all escaped injury. Michael and Maria got over their colds and for the most part Maggie and I avoided it. We got it a little but not nearly as bad as they did.

Thank you mom for helping out during the work hours and shuffling the kids to their day time destinations, I couldn’t have done it without you.

After hours we did the chores that needed to be done. Played with the kittens, hung out, did soccer practice and gymnastics, and on Sunday caught “Cars??? at the cheap theatre.

I discovered Maria is a bona-fide PS2 junkie. She needs help. We’re going to get her admitted into PS2A meetings ASAP.

Maggie is a very good cook for only 11 years old. She took care of us when we didn’t eat out. Pancakes rule!

It was all good until Maria’s Tuesday’s soccer practice. About 5 minutes into it Michael and Maggie went off to kick a soccer ball. Maggie came back to sit down next to me holding her arm in tears. From the looks of things it appeared she had either broken her arm or wrist. It wasn’t good, and it was swelling pretty quickly. I went and got ice from the concession stand and surveyed my options.

If it was broken it wasn’t broken badly, but she was in pain. Maria’s practice still had 45 minutes to do. Perhaps she just hyper extended her wrist; I’m not a Dr. though I have broken an arm and a few bones and Michael has put us through plenty of these experiences. So I’ve seen my share.

I thought I’d hold out for a bit and she how she reacted. It didn’t take long and she decided it was bad enough to go to the hospital.

I rounded up the stuff, and headed to Children’s Hospital and called my parents to have them meet me to watch Michael and Maria so I could stay with Maggie.

All told it went pretty smooth. From approximately a 6pm check in to a 10pm check out we were done. X-Rays negative for a break, though there is a possibility that she has a growth plate break in her wrist, it appears to be a bad sprain from a hyper extension.

She’s in a splint for 3 days to see how she does.

Ahh, the single dad fun begins…

It’s that time of year again. The time when my wife abandons me and takes one of the kids off to Vermont for a almost a week to visit some relatives, thus leaving me with the rest of the clan.

There’s a new twist this year. 2 of the 3 castaways she left behind have some sort of illness. This wouldn’t be so bad, except the one that’s most sick is the littlest.

Some people think Men get grumpy and hard to handle when they are sick, well they haven’t met Maria.

Michael and Maggie are of the age that I can leave them alone now for a few hours while I go to work and wait for Grandma to show up and baby sit for them for the rest of the day. Again this wouldn’t be a problem if there wasn’t this illness in the picture. As it stands now, if Maria were to wake up and I weren’t home, I’d expect here life expectancy would probably be around 20 minutes. That’s probably about as long as Michael and perhaps even Maggie could stand. Actually it will be a team effort to pull through this week or for how ever long this thing hangs around.

So far Maggie and I are not sick, though I kinda felt this funky feeling in my throat this morning which I didn’t like. Let’s hope I too don’t get what they got.

In any event we’ll find some ways to have some fun. The kind of fun that Mom doesn’t allow ? cause after all, she’s not home so she’s not the boss of us.

I’m thinking Maria is old enough for her own Tater Cannon now. There’s no better way to get rid of stray cats or Jehovah’s witnesses.

Maybe we’ll start on that electric fence we’ve been talking about. If I start at the driveway and turn it on, there’s little mom can do about it when she gets home. Or maybe we’ll get rid of the chickens.

More later, I’ve got some planning to do.

Mackinsey comes to visit

This weekend my daughter (Linda) brought my granddaughter Mackinsey up for a visit.

We hung out for a while, then went to Maria’s soccer game. A good time was had by all especially Mackinsey. It’s clear that I’m her favorite and she proved it by spitting up on me.

And Soccer has begun…

Maria had her first game last Saturday. It was hotter than h***.

The Purple People Eaters got schooled for the first 3 quarters of play until they wore the other team out. Maria played very well; actually they all did considering they’ve only had I think 1 practice maybe two? I know Maria has only been to one. Her Gymnastics schedule sort of conflicts for the first couple weeks. She played most of the game. Front line too until she got tired then they put her on defense. Her attention span is a little longer than last year.

She made some great plays when it counted.
